Where to go

Cercedilla
Cercedilla is a small town near Madrid in the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains. The bus trip took about an hour, but you can also take a Cercanias train from Atocha Station. It's a great place to escape the big city hustle since you instantly become surrounded by mountains, pines and countryside. Here you can do all sorts of outdoor activities like hiking, skiing or just simply admire nature in its purest essence. The hiking trails are pretty steep, but they are worthwhile when you get to the top and check out the view.

This mountain village has the small town charm typical of Spanish towns. I went during the winter when it was snowing, but it's a common summer destination for Madrid citizens. I read somewhere that Ramon y Cajal and Joaquin Sorolla lived here. Either way, it's a great day trip.

 Peñaranda de Duero

Peñaranda de Duero is a beautiful medieval village in the province of Burgos dominated by an impressive fortress or castle. The picturesque Plaza Mayor Square holds one of the village's most outstanding buildings, the palace of the Condes de Miranda, where I’ve had the privilege of staying for two summers in a row. The building is owned by the Junta of Castilla & Leon and you can only stay there when attending a seminar. Peñaranda also hosts one of the oldest pharmacies of Spain, maintained by the same family for eight generations. If you like cycling, there are many cyclists who go through this village on a bike tour.

The Santa Ana Winery has some magnificent wines: rich, supple and elegant, fruity, and smooth. If you have not experienced a wine from this tiny, but stunning region, then do grab the chance.
